5 Steps to Finding a Reputable Costa Rica Property Management Company

As a vacation spot, Costa Rica is probably on top of your list, and for all the good reasons, too. You can expect the best of sand, surf and sun in Costa Rica. These will make for a great trip, but another important factor is finding a good vacation rental that fits your need.

When it comes to lodging, there are a wide range of Costa Rica property management companies to choose from for all travelers. In recent years, visitors to the islands have come to favor vacation rentals over hotels because the former tend to be more cost effective, provide more amenities, and also have a ton of choices to suit each traveler’s preferences.

With the breadth of choices that you are faced with, here are five simple steps to streamline your search for a good Costa Rica property management company:

1. List down characteristics that you prefer for your vacation rental. Although Costa Rica is not huge, it is divided into areas that are known for different things. Determine your preferred location based on what you plan to do on your trip. For example, Tamarindo is a culturally diverse beach town with great surfing conditions. If you plan to unwind by surfing, then choose Tamarindo vacation rentals.

Are you looking for a fully furnished, luxurious rental villa, or do you just need the basics? Other factors to consider are your budget, the number of people in your party, and any other personal preferences.

2. Next, search for potential properties that fit your criteria. Ask around from friends, co-workers and family who have been to Costa Rica. You can be sure of their sincerity when they give you advice.

Alternatively, you may browse online forums for other people’s vacation experiences. A little back reading helps significantly. You will spend a few hours on this, but the information you’ll find will be worthwhile. After all, research is key.

Lastly, approach your local travel agent for recommendations (a property management company operating within Costa Rica is your best choice) or do an online search for Costa Rican-owned vacation rentals. Afterwards, narrow down your choices.

3. Once you have a shortlist, contact the property owners. Ask them as many questions as you need. How they correspond with potential clients reflects their competence and service quality. If they can’t give you satisfactory answers or adequate pictures and details, think twice about staying in their property.

4. Cut down your list further to two or three choices. Negotiate for the best possible rates and see how property owners respond. Although you want to get the best deal, owners should not undersell their properties. If you are offered a price that is unbelievably low, take it at your own risk.

5. Lastly, ask for the rental agreement and go through the terms and conditions meticulously. Read the fine print lest you miss out an important point. If the contract calls for a deposit, pay it and ask for an official receipt. And finally, enjoy your vacation!
