Across the estuary from Tamarindo, Playa Grande is part of Las Baulas National Marine Park, created to protect the nesting grounds of the leatherback sea turtle – the largest turtle on the planet. There’s very little development here, so you get miles of open sand and powerful, consistent waves loved by experienced surfers. 4. Playa Conchal – Turquoise Water and Shell Sand

About 40 minutes north of Tamarindo, Playa Conchal is one of the most photographed beaches in the country. Its “sand” is made of millions of tiny crushed shells, and the water is usually calm and clear – perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Pack a picnic, rent a kayak or snorkel gear on the beach and plan to stay the whole day.

5. Playa Flamingo – White Sand and Sunset Sails

A little further north, Playa Flamingo has soft, pale sand, calm water and beautiful views across the bay. It’s a great family beach and a popular departure point for sunset catamaran cruises, sport fishing trips and snorkeling tours around the nearby islands.

6. Playa Avellanas – Laid-Back Surf Vibes

Head about 25 minutes south and you’ll reach Playa Avellanas, a favorite with surfers and anyone who loves a relaxed, jungle-backed beach. 7. Playa Negra – A Surfing Legend

Next door to Avellanas, Playa Negra is famous for its world-class reef break, which appeared in the classic surf film The Endless Summer II. Even if you don’t surf, it’s a fantastic spot to watch the pros in action and enjoy a quieter, more authentic side of Guanacaste.

Local Tips for a Perfect Beach Day

• Respect the ocean. Most beaches in Costa Rica don’t have lifeguards. Watch out for rip currents and ask locals where it’s safe to swim.
• Check the tides. Tide pools, estuary crossings and some surf breaks are best at specific tides – a quick look at a tide chart can make your day.
• Protect your skin (and the reef). The tropical sun is strong. Bring a hat, drink plenty of water and use reef-safe sunscreen.
• Travel light. Never leave valuables unattended on the sand or visible in your car.
